Karakusevic Carson and David Chipperfield have been announced as the “preferred bidder” for a pair of residential towers the East London district of Shoreditch. As reported on BDOnline, the £25 million project at Colville Estate will rise up to 14 and 20 stories high to replace the existing 1950‘s low-rise buildings. This will be the second and last phase of the largest council-backed housing development in London and the first UK mass housing project for Chipperfield.

Karakusevic Carson Architects, the practice who collaborated with Mae Architects to design the 5 hectare master plan for Colville Estate, paired with David Chipperfield Architects to face strong opposition from the likes of Feilden Clegg Bradley, AHMM with Haptic, Stephen Marshall Architects, Schmidt Hammer Lassen, Maccreanor Lavington with Sergison Bates and Dutch practice NL Architects with What Architecture.
With an overarching goal to create more affordable housing, client Hackney Council plans to seek a development partner once phase two of the scheme establishes a more refined approach. After the design reaches a specified level of detail, the council will then begin to sell off the apartments into the private rented sector to help finance the earlier phases, of which 40% will be social rented and 10% intermediate.
The first phase of Colville Estate included the completion of 41 units at Bridport House. The second phase is expected to provide 113 homes for social renting and 62 for private sale.
